Scott Muir / Academy Director

Academy Director

Born in Miami, FL, Scott moved to Knoxville at the age of 10. He joined his first travel team at the age of 11 years old, playing for the Farragut Force. Scott played for Farragut High School from 1986-1988. He attended East Tennessee State University, suffering a knee injury in the last game of his Freshman season. Although he still played a little longer, his second knee injury ended his playing career. Scott began coaching in 1997 as a volunteer coach for Farragut Middle School. After his first season “of coaching, Scott realized how much he missed being involved with the sport that shaped his life as a child. He went on to coach for Smoky Mountain Soccer Club, Knoxville Football Club, and Knoxville Soccer Academy to give back to the game he loves.

“I feel it is important for these players to get great coaching from someone who is passionate about developing players to reach their full potential and then pushing them beyond what they believe they can accomplish. There is no better feeling than seeing a player succeed at something they have worked so hard to improve.”

Scott found out early that he needed to educate himself as a coach. He has a background in Psychology and has obtained his USSF National B License and NSCAA National Diploma. He became a student of the game and began learning different styles from around the world. Scott believes that a great coach is also a great student.

“I have been lucky to work with top professional coaches from South America, England, Europe, and the United States. During my time with these coaches I absorbed every bit of knowledge I could.”

This has helped develop Scott into the coach he is today, which has led to some great opportunities and achievements. In 2010 he took over as the Director of Coaching and Operations at Knoxville Football Club. In his time as the Director, he helped rebuild the club from just under 100 players to over 400 players in three years. In 2011, Scott was named Boys Competitive Coach of the Year for the state of Tennessee. In 2014 he became the Assistant Academy Director at Knoxville Soccer Academy and eventually Academy Director in 2017. During his time there, KSA became a leader in building a player centered environment and developing the whole player. In 2019 Scott became a USSF Licensed instructor and began the next steps for improving as many players as possible. He not only uses this to help the staff become better coaches, but to keep them up to date on USSF and USYS guidelines for coaching.

“Things have changed so much over the years and the way to teach the game to our players is always evolving. I have learned so much over the past year from the courses and love passing that knowledge on to coaches, so more players will benefit in the end.”
